About the Project

The Top Citizen Science project aims at shedding light on political and civic participation possibilities of displaced persons from Ukraine in Austria. The project focusses on a Citizen Science approach, where the Ukrainian refugees are not merely a research interest, but rather are researchers on eye-level – proper Citizen Scientists. In close collaboration, the Citizen Scientists will be involved into every scientific step of gaining insight into the research interest.

As a first step, the current possibilities of such societal participation are being elaborated. Second, improvements for those current options (adequacy, reachability, feeling addressed/belonging, etc.) are estimated in close collaboration with the Ukrainian Citizen Scientists. The specific knowledge of the Citizen Scientists is thereby implemented into the research design by workshops, pre-post surveys and interviews. This multi-method design, in combination with Citizen Scientists as essential part of the research team, allows for in-depth analysis of the status quo and future possibilities of political participation and civic engagement for (Ukrainian) refugees in Austria.

The unique contribution of Citizen Scientists is essential in elaborating socially diverse topics, such as participation possibilities of refugees. The background of unique realities of life is contributing in a crucial manner to closing the research gap of what is needed for adequately addressing political and civic participation needs for refugees in Austria. The Citizen Scientists will be involved in every step of the research design, which equips them with useful knowledge about science, and gives us a unique perspective on the topic. Building bridges through common scientific effort is as valuable as it is needed to enhance the horizons of every single one involved.

Become a citizen scientist today by registering and taking part in our project.

Only you know your own experiences!

Our goal is to gather knowledge on the opportunities for political and social participation in the lives of Ukrainian refugees in Austria - and what is missing. We need to know what possibilites already exist and what about them works well for you, and what doesn't. This way, we can analyze the status quo regarding positives and negatives and make suggestions for future participation opportunities based on scientific data.

But only YOU can tell us what YOU experience. How do you participate in the Austrian society in your everyday life? Did you go to a protest? Did you share a petition on social media? Did you play football with a local club? Did run into problems on the way? Did you want o participate but something stopped you? We want to know everything!
